Aim: To evaluate and compare the osteogenic potential of two different photobiomodulation therapies—low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and light-emitting diode therapy (LED)—on MG-63 cells cultured on titanium disks.
Materials and methods: A total of 42 titanium disk samples were placed into MG-63 cell-cultured well plates. The samples were divided into three groups: control group, low-level laser diode group (experimental group I), and light-emitting diode group (experimental group II). After the placement of titanium disks, both experimental groups were exposed to their respective radiations for three different durations (2 minutes, 4 minutes, and 6 minutes). Cell viability was evaluated at 24 and 48 hours, while cell growth, attachment, and proliferation were assessed using the MTT assay at 72, 96, and 120 hours.
Results: Both experimental groups demonstrated a positive effect on osteogenic potential. The light-emitting diode group was statistically more significant in promoting osteogenesis compared to the low-level laser diode group and the control group.
Conclusion: LED therapy showed superior osteogenic potential on titanium disks when compared to LLLT. However, further long-term trials on a larger scale are necessary to validate these results.
Clinical significance: This study highlights the potential of LED therapy as a more effective adjunct to dental implant procedures, which could lead to improved osteogenesis and higher success rates in dental implants, especially in challenging clinical conditions.
